Camaldoli is one of those singular monastic places from which an entire monastic culture has emanated and which is still alive today. The number 11 plays a role there: the 11th century and 1,111 m above sea level mark the space-time structure in which St. Romuald founded this semi-Remitic branch of the Benedictines northeast of Arezzo. Similar to the Carthusians, there are also hermit monks here, each inhabiting small houses with gardens. As a Benedictine heritage, there is also a monastery with community life, so that a Camaldolese can choose which way of life he prefers. One of the most important areas of work there is the production of cosmetic products.
